Who was Elmina P Spencer?
Who was Elmina Spencer? Elmina was born in the year 1819 in the town of Mexico and was a nurse in the Civil War. Post-war she was one of four women to be honored by the state of New York with a marble statue bearing her likeness placed on the Grand Stair Case of the Capital Building in Albany, New York. 2019 marks the 200th anniversary of Elmina P Spencers birthday.
To hear the “Tale of Elmina Spencer” come to the Volney town hall on May 5, Sunday 2 p.m. Joyce Cook will enlighten you with “the rest of the story.” Mrs Cook retired in 2001 after being librarian for the Fulton Public Library for fourteen years. She has resided in the town of Volney for twenty-two years.

Calendar & Contest
The Town of Volney History Department is in the process of making a calendar for the year 2020. This calendar will include a contest of twelve (12) photos and ten (10) questions. Answer all or as many as you are able, return this sheet to the town office and you could be a winner. Even two correct answers could be the winner of a 200th anniversary book on the History of Oswego County or another book to be announced. In case of a tie, there will be a drawing to determine the winner.

Display tells the Story of The Boys from Volney
The boys from Volney is a two-board display giving a brief glimpse into the life of the 40 young boys that left home and Volney to fight in WW 1. Every man has a story to tell and this their story. The display includes photos, their story and authentic WW 1 equipment worn and used by the Army soldiers: gas mask, googles, cot, utensils, helmet, uniform and clothing, James ?Stevens wore gear and apparatus on loan by his daughter, Peg Rookey and grandson, Kevin Rookey.
Display will be at the Volney Town Hall, Volney Center, now through the spring of 2019. Free and open to the public Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 4 pm.
